Exercise Less, Not More!

I’ve been saying this for some time.

Check out this letter from Fitness author Jon Benson:

“If I had to pick out the number one reason most people fail to achieve good results in the gym, guess what it would be?

Over-training. Exercising too much.”

I have learned this lesson also…over-training is worse that under-training. With under-training you remain where you are. With over-training you go backwards. What is the point of doing all that work just to go backwards?

This is especially true when doing the wrong type of exercise. Since I’d rather look like a sprinter…than a marathoner…I should train more like a sprinter than a marathoner. And while my goal is to up my mileage on my bike…I am still doing intervals…between traffic and hills…I push hard then I have active rest as I can coast downhill or at traffic lights a complete rest.

Jon also says:

“Look, do you take 21 aspirin for a headache, thinking the more you take the faster your pain will go away?

No?

So why apply the same logic to fitness? Only a certain amount is required. Beyond that, you are spinning your wheels.”

I think that is an excellent point. There is a such a thing as too much exercise. Run away from any trainer that suggests otherwise.
